Flood Risk Map to be Updated with New Technology

Some flood maps in the Biggest Little City are getting a much - needed update after Council voted to approve an agreement with HDR Engineering Inc . in conjunction with Federal Emergency Management Agency ( FEMA ) to make improvements to the flood “Risk Map . ” The areas that will be remapped include portions of White’s Creek , Thomas Creek , Dry Creek , and Double Diamond Creek .
The updated technology will allow for more accurate representations of hydrology and hydraulics in the mentioned creeks , especially for areas that are close to existing buildings .
The total amount of the project is $158 , 687 . However , Washoe County will reimburse the City $79 , 343 . 50 , which is half of the total cost .
City Selects Artist John Fleming for Oddie Project

After receiving extensive community feedback on what residents love about their neighborhood and why it is unique , the City of Reno selected artist John Fleming to create new public art at the corner of Oddie and Silverada Boulevards .
Part of the proposed work includes two structures that spell out ‘Silverada’ and ‘Oddie . ’ It also allows for public murals to be placed inside of the letter ‘O’ in Oddie .
Fleming was selected out of 67 applicants . His proposal was rated the highest out of the three finalists and was the most responsive to community input . The work will be installed on pads on the southwest and northwest corners of Oddie and Silverada Boulevards in RTC’s Oddie/Wells street rehabilitation project .
The budget for the project is $150 , 000 and comes from the National Endowment for the Arts and from a Room Tax allocation for public art .
City Receives $31 , 000 Grant for Military Sports Camp

The City of Reno has been awarded a $31 , 000 grant from the Nevada Department of Veterans Services to support the 14th annual ‘Military Sports Camp , ’ a program that encourages Veterans with disabilities to live a healthy lifestyle .
From fly fishing and paddle sports , to sled hockey and adaptive rock climbing , 15 disabled veterans and injured service members and their spouse/caregiver can participate in the camp . The City provides the transportation , lodging , adaptive equipment , meals , and individualized instruction in adaptive/Paralympic sports at no cost to the participants .
Scheduled for September 2024 , this will be the fourteenth year this event is offered to the men and women who served our country .
Up to Seven Historic Markers to be Installed in Downtown Reno

In an effort to create more educational resources and provide knowledge of Reno’s history , the City has accepted a grant in the amount of $5 , 625 from Nevada Humanities to support the research , design , fabrication , and installation of up to seven historic markers in the downtown area .
The proposed marker locations include:
Old Washoe County Courthouse at 75 Court Street
Lake Street Bridge ( Site of Reno’s Chinatown )
McKinley Park School at 925 Riverside Drive
Douglas Alley
Lear Theater at 501 Riverside Drive
California Building at 75 Cowan Drive
Reno City Hall at 1 E . First Street
This grant requires a cash match of $5 , 000 . The match will come from council donations .
Council Donates to Sons and Daughters of Erin

To support their mission to revive , foster , and promote Irish cultural events , interests , and sentiments , Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Councilmember Megan Ebert are allocating council discretionary funds to Sons and Daughters of Erin .
Established in 1969 , The Sons and Daughters of Erin is a northern Nevada non - profit and Irish heritage organization that not only promotes Irish heritage and culture , but serves those less fortunate in our community . Mayor Schieve is donating $1 , 000 while Councilmember Ebert is donating $500 .
