☷New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Gun Offense

In a more casual tone , U . S . Attorney Duane A . Evans announced today that Darran Boykins , 29 , pleaded guilty on Jan . 25 to having ammo as a felon , breaking the law . Boykins could face up to 10 years in jail , a fine of up to $250 , 000 , up to three years of supervised release , and a mandatory fee of $100 . Boykins is scheduled for sentencing on April 25 . According to court documents , on March 20 , 2021 , New Orleans cops responded to a violent incident involving a gun at a house in the Seventh Ward neighborhood . While investigating , officers found ammo in a dresser at the residence , along with Boykins ' s Louisiana ID . Boykins had previous felony convictions that made his ammo possession illegal . Most recently , Boykins was convicted on Jan . 23 , 2019 , for having a gun as a felon . This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence and make neighborhoods safer . The Department of Justice launched a strategy to strengthen PSN on May 26 , 2021 . The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives ( ATF ) and the New Orleans Police Department . Assistant U . S . Attorney Sarah Dawkins is in charge of the prosecution for the Violent Crime Unit .
