The New Jersey Air National Guard ' s 108th Wing just introduced its newest unit on March 6th , the 170th Air Refueling Squadron . Following the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 , this new unit , made up of about 60 Citizen - Airmen , will be responsible for aerial refueling missions in partnership with the active - duty 305th Air Mobility Wing . The 170th Air Refueling Squadron , along with the 108th Wing ' s 141st Air Refueling Squadron , will provide aircrew for the KC - 46 Pegasus tankers . This means the New Jersey Air National Guard now has two squadrons working alongside the active duty ' s two squadrons , completing an embedded classic association . Both wings are contributing two squadrons to support conventional and strategic efforts . Colonel Eric A . Guttormsen , the 108th Wing commander , expressed his excitement about these new developments and has full confidence in the Airmen ' s abilities to serve with dedication and support global mobility efforts . The 170th Air Refueling Squadron ' s designation is derived from the 170th Air Refueling Group , which was previously located at McGuire Air Force Base , New Jersey . However , this squadron is entirely new , according to Colonel William A . Liess , the 108th Operations Group commander . He emphasized the significance of this activation and the opportunity it presents for the Air National Guard to serve the state and nation with its newest squadron and tanker aircraft . During the activation ceremony , formal military orders were published and the squadron ' s guidon was unfurled . Lieutenant Colonel Matthew J . Secko was introduced as the squadron ' s first commander and he expressed his privilege and honor to lead this new unit . Each member of the squadron received the squadron ' s patch , which was chosen from nine submissions in a design contest held within the wing . Overall , it was a great day for the team .
