Batten down the hatches again . More rain is in the forecast . Rain will likely start late Saturday/early Sunday , but be heaviest on Monday and Tuesday , clearing Wednesday . Once again , our dedicated Public Works teams will be out making sure storm drains , catch basins and culverts are clear so the rain water will have a place to go and keep street flooding to a minimum .
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Crime Prevention Symposium this past Monday night . We had a wonderful standing - room - only turnout and discussed many important items relating to public safety in Calabasas; including how to keep your own home safe , security cameras , open space burglaries , and other issues .
This important meeting was recorded and you can find the link to watch it at our website ,
www . cityofcalabasas . com
– and we’ll show it periodically on CTV Channel 3 . If time permits , I really encourage everyone to watch the recording .
I am thrilled to announce that construction of Wild Walnut Park has officially begun . The park ( including the dog park ) is now closed until summer . The Bark Park on Las Virgenes is still open during this time . We can’t wait for this new park to be ready for everyone to enjoy .
Opening our recreation facilities is a main goal for staff – and the Calabasas Community Center is re - opening on Saturday March 16th – one month from today! I wanted to share our official Lunar New Year Greeting from the City of Calabasas to our sister city in Anqing , China . Wishing those who celebrate a prosperous and joyful Year of the Dragon .
The 4 . 6 Malibu earthquake last Friday is just another reminder that we live in earthquake territory and need to be prepared . After the devastating Woolsey Fire in November of 2018 in LA and Ventura Counties , a group of Calabasas citizens banded together to form EPIC - FSC , a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) non - profit organization dedicated to helping our residents mitigate risks , survive an emergency , and recover from fires , earthquakes , and other natural disasters . EPIC Calabasas has developed an app that has great resources on preparing for an earthquake , wildfire , mudslide and other natural disasters – and what to do afterward – including checklists for your home and family . You can find the app at the App Store and Google play .
Our Los Angeles County Assessor reached out and shared information that I wanted to pass along . In light of the current storm , property owners who have suffered damage may be eligible for tax relief under the
Misfortune and Calamityprovisions . This relief is designed to help with the financial burden and help you recover from the unforeseen circumstances brought about by natural disasters . To qualify , you must file an Application for Reassessment: Property Damaged or Destroyed by Misfortune or Calamity ( ADS - 820 ) , with the Assessor’s Office within 12 months from the date the property was damaged or destroyed . There are also rules about the minimum amount of loss sustained . If you have questions about this type of relief , please visit the Assessor’s website at

Our Mayor’s Youth Council is holding its Voter Information Night next Tuesday , the 20th at 6:00 pm . My Council colleague James Bozajian will be providing an overview of the upcoming March ballot . This event is designed to simply educate residents on elections and their importance . As mentioned , the Mayor’s Youth Council is hosting the event , but it’s meant for people of all ages and it’s a great way to look at the upcoming Primary Election in an objective and unbiased way . Again , that’s Tuesday the 20th , at 6:00pm in Founders Hall .
Hear what’s going on with the world around us in Calabasas . The City’s Environmental Commission is holding its annual forum in two weeks . Mark your calendars for Thursday , February 29th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center . The theme this year will be the environmental initiatives in and around Calabasas . Please join us for this important event .
We are heading into the Presidents Day weekend . If you need to contact City Hall for any matter , please remember Monday the 19th is a Federal holiday , so City Hall will be closed .
Have a wonderful weekend ,
Alicia
