Early this week , the Los Angeles County Sheriff ordered an evacuation warning for a portion of Topanga Canyon because of potential mud or debris flow . The evacuation order was given by zone . Many residents reached out to me asking again what their zone was . It is so important that we all become comfortable and familiar with our zones because in the event of an evacuation order , first responders will issue them by zone . We have developed a user - friendly map for the City of Calabasas . If anyone has any questions about their zone , please feel free to reach out . You can find the zone map on our website
here
. Once there , click on the map and it will take you to a larger PDF . The zone application is through a product called
genasys Protectand you visit its website
here
. You can also find the app on the App Store and Google Play .
I wanted to provide another reminder for our Crime Prevention Symposium that will be taking place on February 12th at 6:00pm in Founders Hall . Open space burglaries are unfortunately continuing to hit our community and this important topic will be discussed . Open space burglaries are impacting residents from Beverly Hills to Thousand Oaks and we will be discussing crime prevention tips and ways you can keep your property safe .
One of my favorite programs that the Calabasas Library offers is Paws to Read . This event is taking place on Saturday February 10th from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm . This program is designed for new and young readers ( grades K - 3 ) to read to therapy dogs . Check the video on the program our Communications Department produced last year at
https://youtu . be/nkp25Pekrkk
. The dogs will sit or lie down next to your child as they read out loud to the dog . Please click
hereto reserve your spot .
It’s hard to believe that it’s almost February . With Valentine’s Day approaching , our Community Services Department is offering a fun new event - Be My Valentine Paint Night . This event will take place on Tuesday February 13th from 6 - 8 pm at De Anza Park . You can register as an individual or as a pair .
Coyotes are a part of the landscape in Calabasas and it is always important to be aware of your surroundings , so we can keep our pets safe . Many people have reached out recently and have claimed to see more coyotes . The breeding season for coyotes is most active between January and March and coyote pups are born in March through May . According to experts both of these cycles can cause changes in behavior which may explain why residents are seeing more coyotes recently . Here is a link to the City’s coyote encounter form . This form should be used if you continue to see a coyote in the exact same location and feel it is sick or causing a risk to humans or animals .

A few reminders for us all to follow during this time:
Do not feed them ( or any other wildlife for that matter ) .
Remove bird feeders from your yards - - as when seeds fall to the ground , they attract small animals , on which coyotes’ prey .
Do not feed pets outside , as even scraps or morsels left behind may serve as attractants to wildlife .
Keep garbage can lids tightly secured and take your trash out on the morning of trash pickup , and not the night beforehand .
If you see a coyote , do not run from it . Much like when seeing a loose dog , be aware of it , yet calmly walk away , and inside if possible .
Do not let your pets run free and/or unattended .
If you are out walking your dog , especially after sunset and at night , it is best to refrain from using retractable leashes . If you are too far from your dog , a coyote may only see the dog and not the human that is attached to the dog , given the reach of the retractable leash .
Also , if walking after sunset , be extra aware of your surroundings .

Tomorrow morning , you can join City of Calabasas engineers for a tour of the Las Virgenes Creek – to learn about all the work we’ve done in the past; but also learn about what’s coming in the future . The tour will start with a short ten - minute presentation at the gazebo before beginning the walk trail to Agoura Road ( 1 . 5 miles one - way ) where the tour will conclude . A City Shuttle will be provided at Agoura Road for those not wishing to walk back . Meet at 10:00am at the lower Gazebo on Lost Hills Road across from De Anza Park .
