I wanted to start this week’s letter with an update on the West Village Project . I know many of you have been very involved in all aspects of this project and I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the latest developments . On November 27 , 2023 , Superior Court Judge Curtis Kin issued a ruling against the City of Calabasas related to the City’s denial of the West Village project . I know this is not the outcome that the residents or City were working toward . The City had denied the project primarily due to safety and open space concerns and had vigorously defended its position . The ruling ordered the City to allow the New Home Company to build 180 residential units without further review or approval . State lawmakers have strengthened numerous housing laws making it more difficult for local governments to deny housing projects .
As a result of the Judge’s ruling against the City and the State legislation , the City entered into a settlement agreement with the New Home Company and the project size is now reduced from 180 multi - family units to 76 single - family homes . At this past Wednesday’s Council meeting , the City Council certified the original environmental impact report ( EIR ) which was a requirement of the settlement agreement . The developer will now submit final plans for the revised project for consideration at a future City Council meeting .
You can watch a replay of this meeting to hear the entire Council discussion and comments from the City’s legal team on YouTube at

. In order to strengthen the City’s protection against development in future open space areas , the City Council will also consider a ballot initiative at a future date which will strengthen current open space laws in Calabasas .
In other items … I wanted to remind everyone about the road closures this weekend . SoCal Edison ( SCE ) will be performing work on the power pole and electrical and communication facilities near Wild Walnut Park – Mulholland Highway and East Old Topanga Canyon Road both days this weekend:

The City of Calabasas apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding . If you want to avoid the closure altogether , you could try a lengthy detour via Las Virgenes Road . It may be best to adjust your schedule and stay away from the area , especially this weekend when the entire intersection will be closed . If you have any questions or concerns , please do not hesitate to contact us at 818 - 224 - 1600 .
It’s time again for the Greater LA Homeless Count for 2024 , and for Calabasas , it will take place January 23rd . If you are interested in helping out , you can register online today to join in Calabasas or any of the deployment sites across LA County by visiting the site
here
. This is something done annually throughout the County to get a true picture of the number of people experiencing homelessness; and then use these numbers to deploy the proper resources . I’ve participated in the Count many times and it ' s a very interesting experience .
Of course , in Calabasas , if you ever see someone experiencing homelessness , please use the City app or website at
www . cityofcalabasas . com/services/report - a - problem
. The City of Calabasas works with a Homeless Outreach Coordinator to respond to these situations .
Please save the date for our annual Public Safety Symposium . It will be held on February 12th from 6:00pm - 7:30pm in Founders Hall . These are great events . It’s an opportunity to receive an update from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station on current crime trends ( including residential burglaries ) , crime prevention tips for homeowners , updates on new crime prevention technologies , and other topics relevant to public safety in Calabasas .
The City of Calabasas is hiring for summer jobs … and beyond . We’re holding two hiring events to bring on recreation attendants and lifeguards . Some of these jobs require you to be at least 18 years old . The first event is next Tuesday night at De Anza Park , starting at 5:00pm . The second is on Saturday , January 20th at 1:00pm . Check out the graphic for more information .
