I’m sure you know by now , yesterday’s rainstorm isn’t the only rain we can expect . A lot of rain is headed our way , starting Sunday and lasting through Wednesday . Several inches of rain is expected to fall on Calabasas and our Public Works teams have been working hard to make sure storm drains are clear of any debris so flooding is kept to a minimum . But flooding , or downed trees or mud flows are always a possibility . Be sure to sign up for emergency notifications on our website at
www . cityofcalabasas . com/publicsafety . Also , remember to follow the City on social media and be sure to follow LA County Fire , and the Lost Hills Sheriff’s station as well . Our goal is to keep the city informed .
Every February , the United States celebrates Black History Month . Black History Month honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape our country by celebrating the rich cultural heritage , triumphs and resiliency that are an integral part of our country ' s history . Every year , Black History Month has a theme and this year the theme is
African Americans and the Arts .
In honor of this theme , I wanted to share my favorite quote from the great poet Langston Hughes:
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken - winged bird
That cannot fly .
During this month and beyond , I hope we can all learn a little more about the great contributions made by African American artists and the impacts these artists have had on our enjoyment of the arts .
One of the goals of the City Council is to hear from the public on items that we consider at our meetings . Like many other local governments , during the pandemic , we pivoted to using Zoom technology . This platform allowed us to stay connected to the public during meetings when we couldn’t meet in person . At our last City Council meeting , we discussed whether to continue using Zoom . After great dialogue , we decided to discontinue using Zoom technology for two reasons: 1 ) There were hardly any people utilizing this feature and; 2 ) So - called
Zoom Bombingwas becoming too frequent as the hate - filled racist and anti - Semitic language from the callers was taking away from the ability to focus on real issues .
The #1 goal remains to hear from the public , so in light of discontinuing Zoom , I want to make sure that everyone knows all the ways that they can watch our City Council meetings and also all the ways that they can share their input on an agenda item and communicate with the Council . The best way is by showing up to Council meetings at City Hall . Usually , we meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm . There is nothing better than seeing the public in Council Chambers . And there’s nothing better for residents than to look their representatives in the eye and share their thoughts and ideas . You can also reach out by email . If you go to the City’s website at
https://www . cityofcalabasas . com/government/city - councilyou can find contact information for each City Council member – and , believe me , we all read your emails . You can always watch the meetings live on CTV 3 , or on our website at
www . cityofcalabasas . com/ctvlive
. We also stream the meetings on our YouTube channel at
www . youtube . com/cityofcalabasas
. Once there , just click on the Live tab . Transparency is important to me and the other Council members and City staff , and we want to make sure you can be involved .
In addition to working on policies and long - term plans , elected officials spend a significant amount of time working on constituent services . Most people know how to reach their Council member if there is a local issue , but I wanted to make sure that our residents know that our Congresswoman Julia Brownley provides the same service for federal issues . If you are having issues with a federal agency ( for example , Passport services , veterans’ services or a Social Security issue ) , you can contact her local office at ( 805 ) 379 - 1779 . Her staff is there to help .
We are fortunate in our community to have residents who are so passionate about causes around the world . Next Tuesday , February 6
that 6:00pm , please join the Calabasas Library to watch the film:
Beyond the Battle: Unsung Heroes of Ukraine
