"33 years may sound like a long time , but it went by quickly , " Hawbecker said . "I might not remember all the projects and work we did , but I definitely remember the people , many of whom are here today . They really supported me and played a big role in both my success and the Army ' s success . " Hawbecker initially joined the government service as a Department of the Army civilian with the Combat Systems Test Activity ( now called the U . S . Andy Nuce , the commander of USAMMDA , praised Hawbecker ' s contributions to the Department of the Army , highlighting his exceptional leadership skills and the trust he built with his colleagues at all levels of the chain of command . "Steve led by example , creating a professional culture within the office and being a great role model for his team members , " Nuce commented . "He worked hard and treated everyone with respect . He understood his team ' s strengths and weaknesses and motivated them to do their best . He also prioritized their development by giving them training opportunities to improve their knowledge , skills , and abilities . " To end the ceremony , Hawbecker thanked his wife Carrie and daughters , Amanda and Kayla , and received congratulations from his team and colleagues , recognizing his years of valuable service . One gift , in particular , represented the theme of the day and the feelings of the gathered family , friends , and medical development professionals: a t - shirt that said , "Keep Calm and Let Steve Handle It , " showing the trust Hawbecker had earned over the past 33 years .
