☷Former Tomb Guard Pins Son with Badge

When Bryan Campagna pinned the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Identification Badge on his son , Corporal Isaiah Jasso - Campagna , it represented more than just a father honoring his son . Campagna had earned his own special badge years earlier as a tomb guard , making them the only father - son duo to have received the badge in the history of the 3rd Infantry Regiment ( The Old Guard ) . To earn the badge , Jasso - Campagna completed five phases of testing and demonstrated a high level of military knowledge and tomb guard proficiency . Those who earn the badge are referred to as guards . Jasso - Campagna received his badge during a ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery on January 17 , 2023 . In front of a crowd of family , friends , and other tomb guards , First Assistant Bugler Andrew Jay , who oversaw the ceremony , congratulated him and charged him with the responsibility of assisting future soldiers in becoming guards . Jasso - Campagna then invited his father to affix the badge onto him . Campagna knew exactly where the badge should be placed , as he had worn one himself when he served as a guard from 2002 to 2004 . Some members of Jasso - Campagna ' s family became emotional and tears flowed . After completing the task , Campagna kissed his son on the forehead and returned to his seat , receiving applause from everyone present . Proudly displaying his tomb badge , Jasso - Campagna recited the tomb guard creed , declaring unwavering dedication to his duty . His father stood at attention and joined him and the other tomb guards in reciting the remaining creed together . The ceremony held great significance for Campagna as well .
