☷Jacksonville Man Sentenced to Seven Years in Federal Prison on Fentanyl and Firearms Charges

Jacksonville , Fla — Judge Henry Lee Adams , Jr . , sentenced Mario Lenard Elbert , 34 , of Jacksonville , to seven years in federal prison for having fentanyl with the intent to distribute and having a firearm for drug trafficking . Elbert had admitted guilt on Aug . 22 , 2023 . According to court records , on May 11 , 2022 , a trooper from the Florida Highway Patrol pulled over Elbert ' s vehicle for traffic violations . Elbert ran away from the car but was caught after a short chase . He had 54 grams of fentanyl and a loaded gun on him . Elbert is not allowed to have firearms because of a past felony conviction in South Carolina in 2019 . The Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms and Explosives , the Jacksonville Sheriff ' s Office , and the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the case . Assistant U . S . Attorney John Cannizzaro prosecuted it . This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program that brings together law enforcement and communities to reduce violence and make neighborhoods safer . The Department of Justice launched a strategy to strengthen PSN on May 26 , 2021 , by focusing on building trust , supporting community organizations , setting enforcement priorities , and measuring results .
