Town of Southampton Community Preservation Department is seeking applicants to fill up to four (4) full time (40 hrs. /week), seasonal Invasive Plant Removal Crew Member positions.
The primary focus of these positions is to conduct invasive plant control through hand pulling and mechanical methods. Primary duties will include mechanical and manual removal of both herbaceous and woody invasive plants on numerous properties throughout the Town of Southampton. On any given day crews will consist of 1-3 Invasive Plant Crew Members with direct supervision and assistance from the CPF stewardship staff. Crew members will primarily (>90% of position) hand-pull invasive plants. Mechanical treatment includes using loppers, brush hog, brush cutter, string trimmer, chainsaw, and handsaw will make up the approximately 10% of the job duties.
Crew members will learn how to use various equipment, how to hand-pull weeds safely and correctly, how to identify and treat several invasive plants, and how to identify native plant species of Eastern Long Island. Crew members will also be provided with additional educational opportunities.
Job Requirements: This is a labor-intensive field position, and the employee should expect to spend >95% of their time working outdoors. Must be able to carry various equipment and supplies over varying terrain, lift 50 pounds, and work in all weather conditions. Some work will be conducted in wet areas and proper footwear will be required. Work conditions include encounters with poison ivy, stinging and biting insects, ticks, and other typical field hazards. Safety equipment such as coveralls, bug spray, sunscreen, gloves, eye protection, etc. will be provided.
Applicant should have some experience in identifying native plant species and invasive plant species common to the area. Preferred qualifications include: (a) two years of college courses as part of a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management or other related program; and/or (b) previous work experience in landscaping, forestry, or horticulture.
The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to work independently and in a supportive team environment. Applicant must present themselves in a professional business-like manner when interacting with contractors, town staff, and the public. Applicant must be a legal U.S. resident and hold a valid driver’s license.
Applicant must be in a physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Positions run between May & September (possibility for October & November work as well) - 40 hrs. /week
Hourly Rate: $25.00
