HUD ' s Office of Housing Counseling has awarded $2 . 75 million in grants to seven nonprofit organizations to support training and education for housing counselors . The goal is to provide counselors with the tools they need to assist individuals in achieving their housing goals . HUD Secretary Marcia L . Fudge emphasized the importance of housing counselors in helping people of all backgrounds navigate the homebuying process . The grants will be used to fund professional development and educational offerings for both current and prospective housing counselors , ensuring they are equipped to meet the needs of homeowners , homebuyers , and renters . The funding will also support efforts to attract new professionals to the housing counseling industry and prepare students for careers in this field . Assistant Secretary Julia Gordon highlighted the crucial role of knowledgeable housing counselors in helping households make informed decisions about their financial options . Deputy Assistant Secretary David Berenbaum emphasized that investing in professional development strengthens the housing counseling community and enables counselors to provide the best support possible to individuals and families in need . The grants will be distributed to organizations across the country , including in California , Illinois , and Massachusetts .
