Hey everyone , just a heads up from the U . S . Food and Drug Administration - we ' re warning you to steer clear of certain over - the - counter pain relief products meant for topical use before , during , or after cosmetic procedures like microdermabrasion or tattooing . Six companies got warning letters for selling these products illegally , some of which have too much lidocaine in them . Using these products in ways that increase absorption can lead to serious health issues like irregular heartbeat or breathing problems . Bottom line: these products are risky and shouldn ' t be on the market . Stay safe and avoid OTC pain relief products with more than 4% lidocaine , especially on large or irritated skin . Hey , just a heads up - it ' s not a good idea to cover skin that ' s been treated with over - the - counter pain relief products with plastic wrap or any kind of dressing . Doing so could cause some serious side effects . The FDA is aware of some issues with these products , so if you experience any problems , make sure to report them to the MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program . The FDA has sent warning letters to the companies behind these products and they have 15 days to respond with a plan to address the issues . If they don ' t , legal action could be taken , including seizing their products . Some companies have even been put on import alert to prevent their products from coming into the U . S . and reaching consumers .
