Hey , guess what? The U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development just announced that they completed a deal with the Housing Authority of the City of Cumberland . They ' re gonna fix up and preserve 100 affordable rental homes for seniors and people with disabilities at John F . Kennedy Apartments in Maryland . This is all part of their plan to make sure homes are not just affordable , but also nice places to live . The building was built in 1967 and needs a lot of improvements to keep it in good shape for the residents . They ' re gonna convert some units and make them accessible for people with disabilities too . The Housing Authority plans to do the renovations in three phases so the residents can stay there during construction . The whole project is gonna cost about $17 . 7 million , and they ' re getting funding from a few different sources . This is all part of a bigger program called RAD that ' s trying to fix up and replace a bunch of affordable housing across the country . It ' s a pretty cool initiative . In Section 8 , residents still have to pay 30 percent of their income for rent and the housing has to keep serving those with very low and extremely low incomes , just like when it was part of the public housing program . Before converting , residents have to be informed and consulted , and they have the right to go back to assisted housing after construction . This way , the same tenants can enjoy the newly preserved and improved apartments and keep the same rights they had before . If you want more information about the RAD program , you can check out their website or visit the RAD Resource Desk for data on RAD . You can also see photo essays and read case studies that show how RAD is successfully preserving and improving public housing for low - income families . And if you ' re a public housing resident or new to the RAD program , there ' s an educational video you can watch .
