Durham , N . C . ( Tuesday , February 13 , 2024 ) – Durham County Sheriff Clarence F . Birkhead released the following data regarding gun related incidents covering all last year ( 2023 ) as well as last month ( January 2024 ) :
   2023 - Year 262 - Total Number of Firearms Seized 34 - Total Number of Firearms Reported Stolen 17 - Total Number of Firearms Recovered/Found
   2022 243 - Total Number of Firearms Seized 31 - Total Number of Firearms Reported Stolen 18 - Total Number of Firearms Recovered/Found #
   January 2024 ( last month ) 21 - Total Number of Firearms Seized 3 - Total Number of Firearms Reported Stolen 1 - Total Number of Firearms Recovered/Found "Firearms being stolen from unsecured motor vehicles remain a challenge and our Patrol Units continue seizing weapons off the streets connected to various criminal activity , " Sheriff Birkhead said . "Our Anti - Crime and Narcotics Unit ( SAC/NARC ) and other strategic crime fighting initiatives are continuing to make progress across Durham County . " As a direct result of recent “Gun Buy Backs” , DCSO has successfully removed approximately 650 guns off the streets of Durham since 2022 . The most recently completed initiative took place in November 2023 when 147 weapons were voluntarily turned in .
