The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) is providing $171 million in funding for 49 projects across 21 states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop decarbonization technologies . Additionally , there is an opportunity to apply for $83 million in funding to decrease emissions from hard - to - decarbonize industrial sectors . These initiatives support President Biden ' s goal of achieving a net - zero emissions economy by 2050 and are part of his plan to create jobs and strengthen America ' s manufacturing and industrial competitiveness . The projects will focus on various areas , including decarbonizing industrial heat and researching low - carbon fuels . We ' ve got a bunch of different projects that we ' re funding to help speed up the use of hydrogen - fueled heating technology and low - carbon combined heat and power . We ' re also looking into new technologies and materials to make industry more energy - efficient and environmentally friendly . There ' s a focus on reducing CO2 emissions in chemicals , iron and steel production , food and beverage manufacturing , cement and concrete , and forest products . We haven ' t made any commitments yet , but we ' re in the process of negotiating funding for these projects . You can find more info on our website . We ' re tackling the challenges of reducing carbon emissions in energy - intensive industries . Our funding opportunity , called Energy - and Emissions - Intensive Industries ( EEII ) , will focus on research and development for the sectors that emit the most greenhouse gases , like chemicals and fuels , iron and steel , food and beverage , building and infrastructure materials , and forest products . These industries are responsible for over 65% of manufacturing emissions in the US , which harm public health and the environment . It ' s crucial to decarbonize these industries in order to clean up supply chains and meet President Biden ' s clean energy goals . We ' re also partnering with the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management for pre - front - end engineering and design studies that support the development of decarbonized industrial processes using innovative technologies . If you ' re interested , concept papers are due by March 19 , 2024 , and full applications are due by June 11 , 2024 . We ' ll be awarding multiple financial assistance awards in the form of cooperative agreements , with a performance period of 12 to 36 months . This funding opportunity is part of our Technologies for Industrial Emissions Reduction Development Program ( TIEReD ) , which brings together resources from different research offices to invest in fundamental science , research , development , pilot projects , technical assistance , and workforce development . The selected projects will also align with our DOE Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap , which focuses on industries with the highest emissions and the potential for impactful decarbonization technologies , such as iron and steel , aluminum , cement and concrete , and other energy - intensive processes . Our announcements today are aligned with two of DOE ' s Energy Earthshots: the Clean Fuels & Products Shot and the Industrial Heat Shot . The Energy Earthshots Initiative aims to solve the toughest technical problems in the energy sector and accelerate the development of abundant , affordable , and reliable clean energy solutions within the next decade . The Clean Fuels & Products Shot specifically targets the transportation and chemical industries , aiming to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and establish the US as a leader in clean fuel and chemical production . The Industrial Heat Shot is all about creating affordable ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector by at least 85 percent by 2035 . The DOE is totally on board with investing in innovative decarbonization technologies every step of the way . Check out the DOE ' s strategy to make the U . S . industrial sector more eco - friendly . ### .
