The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) announced today that it will be playing a major role in the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource ( NAIRR ) pilot as part of President Biden ' s efforts to make the United States a leader in AI . This pilot , led by the U . S . National Science Foundation ( NSF ) , aims to create a shared national research infrastructure that will give researchers and students greater access to computational resources , data , educational tools , and support for AI research . DOE will be providing computational resources to researchers who will build on the Department ' s extensive experience in AI . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm expressed excitement about the partnership and its potential for responsible AI innovation . DOE and its National Laboratories have been investing in AI for decades and have developed cutting - edge tools with applications in various fields . They are now mobilizing their scientific and technical workforce to carry out President Biden ' s Executive Order on AI . The NAIRR pilot , divided into four operational areas , brings together various organizations and agencies to provide resources and support to U . S . researchers and educators . DOE will co - lead NAIRR Secure with the National Institutes of Health ( NIH ) to enable AI research that requires privacy and security - preserving resources . To support NAIRR Secure , the DOE is going to keep using Summit , which is one of the most powerful AI - capable supercomputers in the world . It was supposed to be shut down in 2023 , but it will now be kept running until October 2024 . This will give scientists more computing power to work on energy , artificial intelligence , human health , and other research areas that were previously too difficult or impossible . The DOE is also expanding its research on trustworthy and responsible AI , and the researchers using Summit will have access to Oak Ridge ' s CITADEL framework , which is a secure way to transfer and analyze veterans ' health records . The DOE is also working on a project to use generative AI to create synthetic pathology reports . They are also offering access to the AI Testbed at Argonne National Laboratory , which has advanced AI accelerators for scientific research . The DOE experts in computing , networking , and data management will also help with the NAIRR pilot . To learn more about the DOE ' s contributions , you can visit Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NSF .
