The heads of three federal agencies have teamed up to gather data that will help make eco - friendly upgrades to the country ' s housing . Today , the leaders of the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) , U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) , and U . S . Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) issued a joint letter requesting leading utility companies to freely share energy and water usage data with owners of multifamily properties . The aim is to remove obstacles to energy efficiency improvements for families living in assisted housing . HUD Secretary Marcia L . Fudge stated that thanks to the President ' s Inflation Reduction Act , they are investing billions in much - needed energy efficiency upgrades for vulnerable populations . To do this effectively , they need accurate data , hence the request for utility companies to provide information on energy and water usage . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm added that through President Biden ' s Investing in America agenda , their Home Energy Rebates program will help households save nearly a billion dollars annually on energy bills by making it easier to install upgrades . EPA Administrator Michael S . Regan emphasized the importance of transitioning to clean energy in the housing sector to reduce pollution and costs , especially for marginalized communities . The collaboration between the agencies will result in improved energy data , leading to more efficient and affordable homes . In order to get the most out of these investments , landlords of apartment buildings need to have access to all the energy use information for their properties . Unfortunately , a lot of utility companies don ' t share this data . The EPA has some guidelines for utilities on how to make this data available , and they ' re also offering one - on - one help to utilities who want to make it happen . If utility companies step up and make this information accessible , it will make it easier and cheaper for landlords to make improvements in the communities they serve .
