Fifty - six years ago today , Dr . Martin Luther King , Jr . took his last breath in his fight to make our nation better . He was in Memphis to support sanitation workers who were demanding better working conditions , fair wages , and respect . Unfortunately , an extremist with a rifle ended his life , but his impact lives on . Dr . King and many others have inspired generations of Americans , including myself . His mission inspired me to leave my job at a prestigious law firm and become a public defender . I ' ve witnessed progress and setbacks in the areas he fought for , from voting rights to jobs and justice . I ' ve had the honor of serving as Vice President under the first Black President and now alongside the first woman Vice President , continuing Dr . King ' s vision of a united community . However , we must also remember an important lesson from Dr . King ' s life – we must reject political and hate - fueled violence in any form . We must condemn it and confront it , not ignore or erase it . Let ' s choose unity over chaos . Jill and I send our love to the King family , especially remembering the legacy of Mrs . Coretta Scott King . May God bless Dr . Martin Luther King , Jr .
