The Uganda Constitutional Court ' s decision to uphold most aspects of the Anti - Homosexuality Act is really disappointing . It puts human rights at risk and could harm Uganda ' s economy . Although the Court did overturn some parts of the law , they didn ' t completely get rid of it , which means LGBTQI+ individuals are still in danger of facing violence , discrimination , and even life imprisonment or the death penalty , just for being themselves . President Biden said it best when this law was passed: "No one should have to live in constant fear or face violence and discrimination . It ' s just not right . " As President Biden has directed , the United States is looking into how this law affects our engagement with the Ugandan government and has already taken some important steps . We will hold those responsible for human rights abuses in Uganda accountable , both on our own and with our international partners . Yesterday ' s ruling was a missed chance for Uganda to protect the rights of all its people and show the world the importance of treating everyone with dignity , compassion , and acceptance . The United States is committed to supporting the people of Uganda and we deeply admire the brave human rights defenders fighting for everyone ' s rights . We will keep working to strengthen democracy , protect human rights , and fight corruption in Uganda and around the world .
