Deshawn Washington , a 22 - year - old from Indianapolis , has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for illegally possessing firearms as a felon . Detectives from the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force searched his residence on the East side of Indianapolis in connection to illegal gun sales . Despite being on probation for a previous gun possession conviction , Washington was found with a handgun and an AR - style pistol . He had a history of felony gun convictions , making it illegal for him to have firearms . Authorities are working to remove repeat offenders like Washington from the streets to prevent further gun violence . This is the type of case that the ATF and the ICGTF look into , and we ' ll keep working to get rid of the people pulling the trigger and those supplying them from the streets . The ATF and Indiana Crime Guns Task Force investigated this case . The sentence was given by U . S . District Court Judge James R . Sweeney II . Judge Sweeney also ordered that Washington be supervised by the U . S . Probation Office for three years after he ' s released from federal prison . U . S . Attorney Myers thanked Assistant U . S . Attorney Pamela S . Domash , who handled this case . This case was brought as part of the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force ( ICGTF ) , which is a partnership between law enforcement officers and analysts from various central Indiana law enforcement agencies in Boone , Hamilton , Hancock , Hendricks , Marion , Morgan , Johnson , and Shelby counties . Along with state , local , and federal partners , the ICGTF works together to tackle violent crime by using innovative methods to locate suspects and evidence related to violent crimes and illegal possession of firearms . This case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program that brings all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve together to reduce violent crime and gun violence , making our neighborhoods safer for everyone . On May 26 , 2021 , the Department of Justice launched a strategy to reduce violent crime that strengthens PSN based on these main principles: building trust and credibility in our communities , supporting community - based organizations that prevent violence , setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities , and measuring the outcomes .
