The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Renew America ' s Schools Prize , which will provide $180 million to K - 12 schools for energy upgrades . These upgrades will help lower costs , improve indoor air quality , and create healthier learning environments . The prize , funded by President Biden ' s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law , aims to support underserved schools and contribute to the Administration ' s Action Plan for Building Better School Infrastructure . U . S . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm emphasized the importance of investing in the health and education of children . The program has received a significant number of applications in the past , and the Biden - Harris Administration is committed to providing more resources for students . The prize will focus on schools that serve disadvantaged communities , with eligible improvements including HVAC systems , lighting projects , electric vehicles , and renewable energy technologies . By reducing energy use , schools can save money and reinvest it in educational programs . Additionally , these upgrades can improve student health outcomes and academic performance . Competitive proposals will involve energy assessments and improvement projects in multiple school facilities . Organizations or teams that can handle multiple projects are welcome to submit proposals . In Phase 1 , winners will receive a cash prize of $300 , 000 and progress to Phases 2 and 3 . The awards in Phases 2 and 3 will vary based on the number of school facilities , ranging from $7 . 5 million to $15 million . The program aims to assist school districts in improving energy efficiency , indoor air quality , and learning environments . In 2023 , the program invested $178 million in over 90 school facilities , benefiting thousands of students and teachers . The 2024 prize simplifies the application process and encourages partnerships between districts and industry experts .
