The Virginia Army National Guard Funeral Honors Program recently hosted a training course for Army National Guard Soldiers from various states . The two - week course focused on level 2 funeral honors training , which certifies instructors to teach fellow Soldiers how to provide final respects to military veterans . Staff Sgt . Antonio Alexander from the Virginia National Guard described the training as physically and mentally challenging but also a great experience . The program consists of three levels of training , with level 2 refining the knowledge gained in level 1 . Soldiers like Pfc . Daven Melvin from the Illinois Army National Guard found the mission to be unique and meaningful . The course requires mental and physical discipline , preparing Soldiers for the honorable task of giving back to those who have served the country . Spc . Karla Colindres from the Tennessee Army National Guard emphasized the importance of honoring loved ones and providing the best possible service to their families . The Virginia National Guard Military Funeral Honors Program started back in January 2007 . They have four teams spread out across the state that give funeral details to National Guard Soldiers and veterans from the active Army , Army Reserve , and Army National Guard . So far , they have done over 26 , 000 funeral services , which comes out to about 200 each month .
