In January of 2022 , the Collierville Environmental Commission ( CEC ) toured the West TN Regional Recycling Hub – the facility that processes Collierville’s curbside collection of recyclable material . The Hub services multiple counties and municipalities in West Tennessee and is dedicated to responsibly eliminating waste through waste reduction programs , litter prevention , and environmental education .
The CEC learned the Hub processes 6 , 500 tons of material per year; however , 900 tons of that material cannot be recycled as it does not meet the recycling facility guidelines .
Contamination , or material that cannot be recycled , is the number one problem the facility encounters daily . Much of the material is sorted by hand and the introduction of contamination can significantly hinder the facilities’ efficiency .
“We can all work together to reduce contamination by only putting recyclable materials in our recycle carts , ” said Michelle Obenour , CEC .
