The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming soon , and the
Collierville Environmental Commissionis encouraging residents of Collierville to participate . The Great Backyard Bird Count ( GBBC ) is an example of “citizen science , ” a term used for projects of scientific work in which individual volunteers or networks of volunteers participate in research - related tasks such as observation , measurement , or computation . The GBBC is sponsored by Audubon , The Cornell Lab of Ornithology , Bird Studies of Canada , and Wild Birds Unlimited .
The GBBC is from Friday , February 16 to Monday , February 19 , 2024 , and you can participate for as little as 15 minutes!
The GBBC collects information on bird populations from all over the world and uses this information to track changes in bird populations , not only in the U . S . , but the study is growing to track world bird populations , as well . It is becoming more critical for bird populations to be counted because according to the journal Science , the bird population has declined by 3 billion birds in the past 50 years in the U . S . and Canada—that’s almost 30 percent of the bird population .

Submit a separate checklist for each new day , for each new location , or for the same location if you counted at a different time of day . Estimate the total number of individuals of each species you saw during your count period . ( If you saw one bird come to your birdfeeder several times , count that as only one . Record only the highest number of each bird species you saw all at one time . ) You can also find help in identifying birds by clicking on the Help link on the GBBC website .
Count all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings .
