Scientists have been using LaTeX , a language for creating static printed pages like PDFs , to write papers with mathematical formulas for many years . However , a tool developed by NIST can now convert these papers into web pages , making them more accessible to readers with visual disabilities and easier to view on different devices . The preprint server arXiv is already using this tool to offer its papers in both PDF and webpage formats . This is particularly important because a significant portion of the global population has a diagnosed vision impairment , and many people in the research community struggle to read PDFs . The tool , which converts math formulas from one format to another , could help ensure that the latest research is accessible to everyone . Modern HTML has extensions that allow for type to be re - flowed and math formulas to be read aloud by machines . This makes HTML great for creating accessible text . However , there was no effective way to convert LaTeX to HTML for a long time . This was a problem for Miller when he needed to bring over 1 , 000 pages of NIST’s Handbook of Mathematical Functions online . So , he decided to create his own solution , LaTeXML . This tool was essential for creating the Digital Library of Mathematical Functions and eventually caught the attention of arXiv , a repository of scholarly articles . They will now use LaTeXML to convert their papers into HTML for better accessibility . This change aligns with a broader trend of making web and electronic information more accessible , especially for young scientists . Hey , if you want updates from NIST , just sign up with your email address on their website . Their contact number is ( 301 ) 975 - 4261 . The info was released on January 3 , 2024 .
