Leaders , friends , and family from the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore gathered for a casual ceremony honoring Lt . Gen . David E . Grange Jr . at Access Control Point 2 on Legacy Blvd . in Columbus , Ga . Grange , a highly decorated veteran of three wars , was recognized for his service as an infantryman and as the post ' s commanding general from 1979 - 1981 . The event included remarks from Maj . Gen . Curtis A . Buzzard , performances by the MCoE Band , and the unveiling of the dedication sign for Grange Gate . The ceremony highlighted Grange ' s dedication and valor throughout his military career , which spanned over 20 campaigns . The addition of Grange ' s name to the gate on Legacy Blvd . serves as a tribute to his legacy and his ties to the community of Columbus . Returning for his third tour to Vietnam in 1970 , Grange led the 101st Support Command and the 3rd Brigade , 101st Airborne Division , before becoming the Director of the Ranger Department . He also held leadership positions in the 2nd Infantry Division and with the 6th U . S . Army . Grange was praised for his courage , character , and dedication to duty . He retired in 1984 after a 41 - year career , receiving numerous awards and decorations for his service . In 1992 , he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame for his commitment to duty and contributions to the U . S . Army . Grange ' s legacy as a respected leader and role model continues to inspire others in the military community .
