Staff Sgt . Kabriya Mason , an exercise leader for the Pregnancy/Postpartum Physical Training Program , is leading a fitness session for pregnant and postpartum Soldiers at Fort Carson , Colorado . This program helps pregnant Soldiers maintain their fitness levels and assists postpartum Soldiers in returning to regular physical readiness training . Soldier moms now have a year after giving birth to take the Army Combat Fitness Test and meet height and weight standards , according to the new Army Directive 2022 - 06 . Soldiers enrolled in the Pregnancy/Postpartum Physical Training Program recently attended a class on resources for newborns and mothers . The goal of the program is to promote a healthy pregnancy , prepare for labor , and aid in postpartum recovery . Expecting Soldiers and new mothers at Fort Carson choose to join this program because it provides support that only fellow Army moms can understand . While enrolled in the program , Soldiers are exempt from regular physical readiness training for 180 days after pregnancy . Staff Sgt . Flaming Star Shaffer , a mother of two from the 704th Brigade Support Battalion , shares her experience of not having support during her first pregnancy , making her appreciate the P3T program and the understanding it provides . Women who already have children can use their experience to support other Soldiers in the program , fostering a sense of community and sharing knowledge . Female Soldiers in the program can participate throughout their pregnancy and up to 12 months after giving birth , with the option to extend training with P3T if needed . The goal is to help female Soldiers return to duty after having a child , maintaining their commitment to the Army . The postpartum component of P3T aims to enhance Soldiers ' readiness post - delivery through education and resources . The program managers are dedicated to improving the support for Soldier moms at Fort Carson by educating leaders and units about P3T .
