Summary:
Under the direction if the Building Commissioner, perform skilled inspectional work in enforcing the provisions of the State Plumbing Code, Chapter 142, Section 13, of the general laws and the Massachusetts Fuel Code to protect personal and public health and safety.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following; other duties may be assigned.
Under the direction of the Building Commissioner, perform varied and detailed inspectional duties to ensure compliance with gas and plumbing standards, laws and regulations.
Issue all permits for plumbing and gas installations, alterations and repairs, including all related permits for new commercial buildings, residential alterations and renovations.
Inspect all plumbing, gas piping, and gas appliance installations in the process of construction, alteration or repair for which permits are granted. Schedule all field inspections and consultations relative to construction of such systems.
Assist plumbers and gasfitters, designers and engineers in relative piping designs and layouts, pipe size, etc.; guide plumbers or gasfitters in interpreting the code and the intent of the law; consult and advise other city officials as needed or requested.
Investigate and resolve all code violations and consumer complaints; issue orders for corrections and keep necessary records; mediate concerns and problems between homeowners and contractors.
Maintain records of permits granted or refused; completes and maintains inspection progress reports, prepares other reports and correspondence as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Duties require high school diploma with additional technical education in the areas of plumbing and gasfitting.
Licensed Journeyman plumber for five years in the state of Massachusetts.
Valid Class D Massachusetts drivers license.
Ability to deal effectively with the public; good customer service skills.
Knowledge of plumbing and gas theory and practices, as well as related state and local laws and regulations.
Demonstrate ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and building plans and the ability to prepare necessary diagrams.
Ability to read, interpret and enforce regulations impartially, firmly and tactfully.
Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with other city departments, as well as the police and fire departments.
