POSITION SUMMARY:
The Equipment Operator position operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, front end loader, larger rollers, etc. in the repair and maintenance of City streets.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Works both independently and in close contact with co-workers in carrying out regularly scheduled job duties, as well as duties assigned as assistance is needed by other departments of the City.
Adheres to established policy and work procedure with little supervision required or effected.
Communicates and responds, orally and in writing, to superiors with reference to information concerning department.
Performs finish motor grader work on construction projects to shape streets, shoulders, ditches; operates bulldozer or front end loader in excavating earth for street repairs and other construction projects.
Operates a backhoe to dig ditches, break pavement, and to dig holes for repairs and construction; backfills and tamps ditches; operates a dragline in digging and cleaning ditches and for unloading asphalt, rock and other materials.
Operates asphalt distributors, large rollers and mixers, and related equipment to construct or repair streets and roads; operates winch trucks in moving and hauling machinery and equipment, removing stumps, logs and similar debris.
Operates machinery and equipment including dump trucks, low boy, crack sealing machine, welder, torches, chain saws, pavement breakers, concrete saws, post hole diggers, packers, tractors, asphalt rollers, etc.
Assists in construction projects by laying concrete bricks, mixing and pouring cement mortar, constructing and repairing streets, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
Performs minor field repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment operated and services all equipment used.
Assists in producing computer-generated signs.
Performs other duties and assignments for other departments as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must have the following qualifications:
General knowledge of heavy equipment.
Ability to safely and effectively operate two or more heavy pieces of equipment to meet minimum qualifications to test.
Capable of operating equipment to maximum efficiency that the machine was made to do.
Ability to comply with the City of Woodward safety policy.
Skill to follow oral and written instructions and undertake responsibilities with little direct supervision.
Must possess verbal perception, motor coordination, and manual dexterity.
Ability to read, understand and communicate fluently in the English language.
Willingness to work as needed on holidays and weekends.
Willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather.
Willingness to follow instructions and to assist other departments as needed.
Ability to determine and perform minor maintenance and service on department vehicles and equipment.
Must possess knowledge of the hazards of heavy equipment operations and appropriate safety rules and regulations.
Ability to operate heavy duty construction equipment, street maintenance equipment, and odd construction work.
Ability to maintain working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
General computer knowledge is preferred.
Ability to make mathematical computations accurately and with reasonable speed.
Must be able to pass background screening.
Must be able to pass drug/alcohol screening.
Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and driving record acceptable to City’s insurance carrier.
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant must be able to meet the following working conditions and physical requirements:
Much of the work is performed outdoors in inclement weather and during all seasons.
Some work may be performed in confined areas, on slick and wet surfaces.
May be exposed to vibrations, loud continuous noise, offensive smells, dust, dirt and water.
May be required to work “on call”; during emergencies to work overtime to remove snow, sand and salt streets, and work unscheduled overtime during peak periods.
Performs manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions. Works oftentimes in cramped space, drafty areas, poor lighting, and other unpleasant conditions.
May be exposed to injury from moving equipment, insect bites, poison plants, flying objects, slippery surfaces, and hazardous materials.
Must have strength to pull, lift, push 50 lb. objects on a frequent basis and up to 100 lb. on an infrequent basis; flexibility to bend, twist, reach; mobility to climb, crawl, walk; dexterity to operate machinery and tools on uneven surfaces; and stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions.
Will be subject to 24 hour call and conduct is expected to project dependability and assurance.
