The City of Wilmington will conduct a test of its Emergency Alert and Notification system on
Friday , February 23 , 2024
. The sirens will sound , and test verbal announcements will be made at approximately 10:45 Friday morning .
There are 13 sirens located throughout the City that will be activated for three to five minutes . A full list of sirens is included at the end of this release . These sirens were installed in 2005 as an added means to alert residents and businesses in Wilmington in the event of an actual emergency , and they are monitored and tested annually by
BayComm Inc
.
The siren system is part of the City’s expanded emergency notification capabilities that include subscription - based
Smart 911
and the non - subscription
Integrated Public Alert Warning System
( IPAWS ) . Through IPAWS , messages and calls can be sent to cell devices in a designated area .
