☷DOE Announces $18 Million Towards Clean Energy and Economic Development in 30 Historically Disadvantaged Communities

The U . S . Department of Energy ( DOE ) has announced the second group of communities chosen for the Communities Local Energy Action Program ( Communities LEAP ) . This initiative provides technical assistance to disadvantaged communities and those with ties to fossil fuel industries to help them take control of their clean energy future . These 30 communities will receive $18 million in technical support to create plans that reduce pollution , increase energy resilience , lower costs , and create jobs . Secretary of Energy Jennifer M . Granholm stated that this program will help communities transition to clean energy and improve equity and sustainability . The program aligns with the Biden - Harris Administration ' s goals of supporting community - led clean energy transitions and delivering benefits to disadvantaged communities . The selected communities will work with DOE and local partners to develop plans for using clean energy to drive economic development . The second group of LEAP communities will focus on various areas of interest such as clean energy planning and development , energy - efficient buildings , clean transportation , and more . The selected communities include places like Puerto Rico , Alabama ' s Black Belt Region , and various other regions across the country . Representatives from these communities express gratitude for the support and opportunities provided by the Biden - Harris Administration and the DOE in transitioning to clean energy and creating job opportunities . “We look forward to participating in Communities LEAP to build on the work we have done , including through previous DOE engagements , to expand our workforce training for minority business owners/workers “To carry out urgently needed clean energy work on site . ” They live . Communities LEAP is administered by the DOE Office of State and Community Energy Programs and offered in collaboration with the DOE Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy , Fossil Energy and Carbon Management , Electricity , Nuclear Energy , Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains , Indian Energy , Policy and Energy justice and equity .
