☷Adair Police Chief Convicted for Fraud False Statements and Firearms Charges

In February , a jury in Des Moines found Bradley Eugene Wendt guilty of lying to the ATF , owning a machine gun illegally , and conspiring to make false statements . Wendt , who was the Chief of Police in Adair , Iowa , used his position to get machine guns for himself and his store , BW Outfitters . He wrote letters to the ATF requesting machine guns for his police department , but actually sold them for profit . Wendt also used these letters to buy machine guns for his store , including a . 50 caliber machine gun that he put on his personal armored Humvee . He was convicted of illegally possessing a machine gun registered to the Adair Police Department and hosting a machine gun shoot where he charged people to shoot guns registered to the department . Wendt is facing potential prison sentences of up to five years for conspiracy , five years for each false statement charge , and up to ten years for illegal possession of a machine gun . Sentencing is set for June 14 at the U . S . Courthouse in Des Moines , where a federal judge will determine the outcome based on sentencing guidelines and other factors . FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel criticized Wendt for abusing his position as chief of police for personal gain , while ATF Kansas City Field Division Special Agent in Charge Bernard Hansen condemned his betrayal of the community ' s trust . U . S . Attorney Richard Westphal emphasized the importance of upholding public trust and thanked the investigating agencies and prosecutors for their hard work on the case .
