   Around 5 , 000 people took part in the 35th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range . The event pays tribute to a special group of World War II heroes who defended the Philippine Islands . One of the attendees was Valdemar DeHerrera , a survivor of the Bataan Death March , who has been coming for the past three years . DeHerrera ' s granddaughter , Celina Trujillo , said he loves attending the event . It was the first time for WSMR Commander Col . George C . Turner , Jr . , WSMR Command Sgt . Maj . Michael S . Cordery , and WSMR Garrison Command Sgt . Maj . Jamal N . Latore . Latore expressed his pride in seeing the range come alive and the impressive turnout . WSMR Garrison Commander Col . David A . Mitchell participated for the second year in a row and had a fantastic time running the marathon with his fellow marchers .
