The National Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Germantown as a 2023 Tree City USA , in honor of the City ' s commitment to effective urban forestmanagement .
Among its many other attributes , Germantown is known for its lush parks and vibrant tree canopies that cover more than 40 percent of the City . Behind the community’s tree - lined scenes , the City’s Tree Board works diligently to ensure and nurture the health , development and placement of all that foliage .
Germantown is celebrating its 34th anniversary of being designated as a Tree City USA and its fifth anniversary of being designated as a Tree City of the World , both by the National Arbor Day Foundation , the latter also being in conjunction with the Agricultural Organization of the United Nations .
To be designated a Tree City of the World , a city must meet the following criteria: maintain a tree board or department , have a community tree ordinance , spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry , celebrate Arbor Day and maintain an updated inventory of the local tree resources .
To celebrate Arbor Day , the City’s Parks and Recreation Department will be giving away free trees to Germantown residents on Friday , March 1 from 9 to 11 a . m . in the parking lot of the Germantown Crossing Shopping Center at the corner of Farmington Boulevard and Germantown Road .
