In collaboration with the City of Germantown Community Library , the Germantown Public Art Program announces the 2024 Word Travels sidewalkpoetry contest . New , aspiring or professional writers of any age - living , working or going to school in Germantown - can participate . Poems should be unique and must not use copyrighted materials . Submitted poems should contain no more than 300 characters ( including spaces ) and must not exceed 10 lines . This year ' s contest theme is Transitions .
A selection committee made up of literary professionals , library staff and community representatives will select four finalists and two semifinalists . Winning poets will receive a small monetary prize and their poems will appear in unexpected places along pathways throughout the City . The winners will be announced during National Poetry Month in April .
Word Travels offers the community a chance to engage in public art through a medium other than visual art . With the opportunity for community - wide participation , including school - age children , the selected poems will eventually become a collection of Germantown expressions about all manner of things—including love , loss , friendship , nature , culture and history .
Submissions are accepted from March 1 to March 31 , and can be submitted at germantownpublicart . org .
Two poetry writing workshops will take place at the Germantown Community Library . Led by local creative writing instructor Anna Terry , these workshops are intended for aspiring poets or those who would like a refresher in short form poetry . One - hour workshops are scheduled for Saturday , March 9 , at 1 p . m . for ages 9 to 15 , and Saturday , March 23 , at 1 p . m . for those ages 16 and older . The Word Travels - Mitch Major Memorial Fund was established in 2021 in memory of highly esteemed Germantown Performing Art Center ( GPAC ) board member and City of Germantown resident , Mitch Major whose fondness for literature shaped his entire life . The Mitch Major Memorial Fund is dedicated to sustaining Word Travels - a biannual sidewalk poetry contest inspired by Mitch’s love for the literary arts , his passion for lifelong learning and the joy he took sharing his discoveries in the world of the written word .
