The Superintendent of Roads is responsible for scheduling employees for the construction, maintenance, and general cleanup of Wicomico County roads including clearing of right-of-way’s, drainage work, digging of open ditches, laying of pipelines on a grade, maintenance patching, tree trimming, weed control, mowing, roadside trash collection and other road work.
Assigning daily schedules; Inspecting work projects and contract jobs; Composing job estimates for construction & maintenance work; Compiling Tar & Chip, Slurry, Micro-pave, & Blacktop schedules; Compiling & implementing snow-clearing, salt spreading, & mowing routes; Interviewing and hiring roads labor & managing personnel; Training personnel for herbicide spraying, safety procedures, personal protection equipment, tree & limb trimming, and mowing safety; Maintaining annual schedule of labor rates & equipment costs; Assisting with the annual budget; Operating heavy equipment as needed; Updating information systems and retaining roadway design documents; Recommending annual road construction; and Performing related work as required.
Qualifications
High School Diploma with continuing education course work in highway maintenance, drainage, and excavation; BS in Civil Engineering with a major in highway and drainage design preferred but not required; Special training in highway maintenance, paving, general highway construction: Extensive experience in highway maintenance and/or construction with progressively increasing responsibilities in management of equipment, resources and personnel; Ability to be on call 24/7; Class B CDL driver’s license with air brake endorsement; Valid DOT physical card; MD Dept of Agriculture Herbicide spraying license; State of MD DNR Forest Service Roadside Tree Care Expert Certification; Flagger and Forklift Certification; MD Dept of Environment Erosion Control Training Certification; and Ability to complete any required Homeland Security courses. *A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications*
