Hey everyone , thanks for being here today at this meeting in Rio de Janeiro . We ' ve been discussing some important issues over the past couple of days , and one of the biggest challenges we ' re facing is in Haiti . The situation there is really urgent and concerning . Violence is on the rise , with gangs controlling a large part of the capital and using terrible tactics to terrorize the population . This violence is causing a lot of problems , like blocking trade and aid routes , closing schools , and depriving people of basic necessities like food and water . The United States is doing what we can to help , providing millions of dollars in aid and support for the Haitian National Police . But we know that more needs to be done to stabilize the security situation and ensure that aid can reach the people who need it . We ' re committed to helping Haiti get back on track and return to a peaceful and democratic path . So , we think the best way to make this happen is with the UN - authorized Multinational Security Support Mission , which most Haitians are asking for . Back in September , we got together at the United Nations General Assembly to talk about the urgent need for a UN Security Council resolution to approve this mission . In October , the Security Council passed Resolution 2599 with strong support . We ' ve been holding planning meetings and assessment visits to get ready for this mission . But its success depends on getting the international support it needs . It ' s in everyone ' s interest to improve Haiti ' s security , prevent irregular migration , fight criminal violence , and help Haitian communities . The US is pitching in $200 million for the mission , and we ' re calling on other countries to contribute funds , personnel , equipment , and training . We also believe that long - term stability in Haiti requires not just better security , but also political , economic , and social improvements . We ' re pushing for a return to democracy through inclusive political processes in Haiti , and we ' re urging Prime Minister Henry and others to work together for better governance . The only way to lasting peace and stability is through free and fair elections . Recently , gang violence in Solino , a once - peaceful neighborhood in Port - au - Prince , left residents trapped and begging for help . This is a clear reminder of the urgent need for action . After a long battle , the cops finally got things under control . But Solino is still a mess , and folks are worried that the gangs will come back and take over again . The cops in Solino and all over Haiti are fighting hard to reclaim their neighborhoods . If we support them and the people of Haiti , we can win this fight too . Today is our chance to make a difference . I appreciate everyone who ' s stepping up and lending a hand in this tough but hopeful time . Thanks .
