Cody Steele , a 41 - year - old man from Indianapolis , was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for selling methamphetamine and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime . The incident occurred when police responded to reports of shots fired on the southeast side of Indianapolis . Witnesses saw Steele driving a red Hummer and shooting at another vehicle before driving off . Police found methamphetamine and firearms in his possession during the arrest . Steele was also involved in a domestic assault earlier that day , where he threatened to harm the victim ' s dogs if she tried to leave him . The victim was able to call for help with the assistance of bystanders and employees from nearby businesses . Steele fled the scene , but was later apprehended by authorities . The officers went to the hospital and saw that the victim had bruises and swelling around her eye , a cut and blood on her face , bruises on her arms , blood on her clothes , and broken blood vessels in her right eye . Steele has a long criminal record , including felony convictions for domestic battery , child molestation , and escape . These previous convictions mean that Steele is not allowed to have a gun . He was also convicted of a misdemeanor for violating a no - contact order with his wife . The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana said that Steele is a danger to those close to him and the community . The police and ATF investigated the case , and the judge ordered Steele to be supervised for four years after his release from prison . The case is part of an initiative to stop domestic violence and illegal firearm possession . It is also part of a program to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer .
