Artist John Hastings , known as
Rumtum
, has not one , but two art displays around the Town of Silverthorne . You might not guess that the mural outside of the
Silverthorne Performing Arts Center ( SPAC ) and the 10 - piece exhibit inside the SPAC were created by the same person , especially because the large , colorful painted outdoor mural doesn’t initially resemble the muted sepia toned ink drawings inside . However , the inspiration behind both art displays come from the same place - Silverthorne itself .
“These pieces derive from a memory , photo or place I’ve been in Silverthorne , ” said John .
You won’t be able to miss the bright and bold mural spray painted on the side of the SPAC’s outdoor stage . Nature is big and intense , and John wanted the mural to reflect the respect that nature commands . The playfully saturated colors of wildflowers look surreal and in constant motion . John hopes that viewers feel like “an ant in nature” with the size and scope of the mural , and he wants the art to engulf viewers in the best way .
“Like a playground for your eyes , ” said John .
John worked for a full week on implementing the design he sketched to achieve the look , using various colors of spray paint to bring the sketch to life . He started with an all - black canvas , which allows the gradient colors to pop even more from the darker roots of the plants to the neon tips of the flowers . The floating layers of flowers and greenery and the chromatic intensity of the mural are meant to remind viewers of vegetation hanging over trails as you hike along one of the many beautiful wildflower trails in Silverthorne . Overall , John wants viewers of this mural to feel reconnected with nature , grounded and for the art to bring stress and anxiety relief .
Inside the SPAC , John was once again inspired by Silverthorne’s landscape and drew ink prints based on memories or photos of Silverthorne , such as fishing in the Blue River . Mountains , rivers , leaves , sticks and rocks are all present when viewing his patterned prints that are illustrative in theme . Using antique French watercolor paper , John took two to three days to ink each print and spent a month creating all ten pieces for the exhibit .
The muted coloring of each design pays homage to modern art and the time of year ( winter ) when nature is more dormant . The placement also inspired his work , as viewers are much closer to his pieces on display in the hallway and can fully focus on penmanship details . The abstract patterns are meant to allow your eyes to wander and find different details upon each viewing . And again , John expresses the utmost respect and connection to nature through these pieces of his work .
“I wanted these pieces to be a window into nature and reflect a specific moment in time , ” said John .
Based in Lakewood , Colorado , John runs
Magpie Studiowith a small team , creating digital marketing and branding pieces for companies , prints , paintings and murals . John can , of course , be found in nature when he’s not creating and enjoys fishing , hiking and attending concerts at the Dillon Amphitheater .
