Outside of the
Silverthorne Performing Arts Center
, you’ll find a new sculpture by artist
Reven Swanson
, a talented Denver - based creator who specializes in colorful metal sculptures . The “Dancing Aspens” piece is part of a series that started with a 2001 sculpture in Huntington , New York and includes sculptures in Lake Oswego , Oregon , Grand Junction , Fort Collins and Greeley . Prior to its home at the SPAC , “Dancing Aspens” spent two years in Napa Valley .
Reven’s tree - like sculptures were originally inspired by the changing Aspen trees in Kenosha Pass .
“I was mountain biking during leaf peeping season among the gorgeous changing Aspen trees and I could pick out nearly every color on the color wheel . From there I was inspired to capture the flickering leaves in a sculpture . ”
The powder - coated steel “Dancing Aspens” sculpture uses implied kinetics to give the illusion of movement through the 12 different colors featured in a helix pattern , mimicking an actual color wheel . The sculpture changes with the sun and looks different from every angle , hopefully encouraging its viewers to be inspired and create something meaningful . Reven designed the sculpture to be open - ended , allowing viewers to interact and start a story of their own .
“I hope when people view this sculpture they are able to be totally engaged and almost have a moment of mindfulness . It’s meant to transport you and help you take your mind off of everything else . ”
Reven spent more than 60 hours making the sculpture through an impressive process . She uses a hydraulic press and bottle jack to bend and shape the three - inch diameter steel pipes into the right shape for the “trunks” of each of the three trees . The “leaves” are cut out of sheet metal with a precise laser and then Reven uses an anvil , forge and spot welder to connect them into a “bouquet” of stems which is inserted into the pipes . After everything is sanded and smooth , she then hand paints the sculpture using heavy duty enamel and likes that the brush strokes show how it was hand - crafted . Each tree bends away from a singular point at the base , similar to real - life aspen groves .
For Reven , participating in public art programs is so important for the vitality of each community where her art resides . She appreciates the hard work it takes from Silverthorne to fund , promote and support public art .
“Leaving artwork wherever I go is like leaving little pieces of sunshine . ”
When she’s not actively making art , Reven loves to mountain bike and will transport her commissioned work to any location that has good trails . To learn more about Reven and her work , visit her website at
