Starting his artistic career in photography ,
Miguel Edwardshas become a well - known name in the sculpture community . He has been a sculptor for the past 20 years and one of his favorite pieces , Heron , is now on display outside the
Art Spot Silverthorne Makerspace
.
The Silverthorne Arts Selection Committee was on the hunt for a large , colorful statement piece to welcome patrons to the Art Spot for the grand opening . Upon viewing Miguel’s work , the town quickly realized that one of his pieces would be a great first piece to showcase at this new arts space in town . Built in 2015 while Miguel lived in Seattle , and featured in Denver’s Space Gallery for several years , Heron is made of steel that has been powder - coated blue and stands more than six feet tall . It is part of a series Miguel crafted to move away from the typical baseplate that so many sculptors use . Instead , Heron perches and sits on the tips of three pieces of intertwining metal .
Miguel’s body of work centers around light and motion , and also focuses on implied kinetics . Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object in motion , the energy that exists within the flow . While his pieces don’t often involve physical movement , his steel sculptures embody implied kinetic energy through large steel stock that are welded into fluid , arching shapes to convey movement and emotion .
The color of his sculptures is a gradation inspired by his previous work in photography . For years , he owned a photo studio with a double cove wall that created unique lighting opportunities through the curves of the three - way walls and floor angles .
“Utilizing lighting in the cove space gave me natural gradations , and I like to recreate those gradations in my sculptures now . Though it’s a physical sculpture , I also think of it as a light piece - the way the light strikes it as it moves throughout the sky is part of its intrigue . ”
With steel , Miguel likes that he can create shapes that levitate and defy gravity . Though people and nature inspire his art , his sculptures aren’t necessarily representative of specific people , places or things . He prides himself on intuitively interacting with materials , with one project inspiring the next , endeavoring to make sculptures that are dynamic enough for people to stop and ponder or engage with the sculpture in another way .
“I want to engage the viewer and hope my sculptures can help them start a dialogue with themselves . ”
Before his sculpture business , Miguel worked in several other mediums . He started in photography at 20 - years - old , and still thoroughly enjoys the art , but has also been a jeweler and an oil painter . Currently based in Bend , Oregon , his work can be found in galleries across the nation , including California , New Mexico , Washington , and Arizona .
As a sculptor , photographer and installation artist , Miguel is constantly looking for new ways to explore beauty and to locate hidden common denominators in the world we perceive . Underlying forms and concepts intrinsic to the dynamic between sleeping and waking , as well as the visual logic of human perception , are explored through his three - dimensional work . He aims to create artwork that invites everyone to re - discover the curiosity we had as children: Encouraging us to see life as full of possibilities and to value our experience in the present .
