Hey , check it out! The United States Attorney , Roger B . Handberg , just announced that James Michael O ' Brien , a 48 - year - old dude from North Port , Florida , has been indicted for swiping a firearm from a gun shop and having a stolen gun . If he ' s found guilty , O ' Brien could face up to 10 years in the slammer for each charge . The indictment says that on January 17 , 2024 , O ' Brien stole the gun from J&J One Stop Gun Shop in Port Charlotte , Florida , which is a licensed firearms dealer . Now , remember , an indictment is just a fancy way of saying someone ' s been formally accused of breaking federal laws , and everyone ' s innocent until proven guilty . The Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms , and Explosives did the investigating in this case , and Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan will be handling the prosecution . This whole thing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , an initiative that brings together law enforcement and the community to make our neighborhoods safer by cracking down on violent crime and gun violence . The Department launched a new strategy on May 26 , 2021 , to reduce violent crime even more , focusing on building trust in the community , supporting organizations that prevent violence , prioritizing enforcement , and measuring the results .
