☷New Civics Education Program Puts a Local Lens on Landmark Supreme Court Cases

By teaming up with the Supreme Court Historical Society , federal courts can offer unique opportunities for students . These experiences may include sessions with legal mentors , where students can learn how to write a legal brief , or even participate in a student - led moot court proceeding for a famous Supreme Court case . Cordelia Elder , a high school student who took part in the St . Louis program , emphasized the importance of students learning about the court system and how privileged she felt to learn about it firsthand . As part of the program , students also complete a final project that showcases their understanding of a hometown case . In St . Louis , for example , students collaborated with the Eighth Circuit Library to create a panel display on Hazelwood v . Kuhlmeier , highlighting the case ' s background and Supreme Court decision . This display will be revealed at the St . Louis Judicial Learning Center later this year . The program aims to lessen the intimidation factor that often comes with courthouses , especially the Supreme Court , by welcoming students and connecting them with the diverse range of people who work there . Aiyla Ahmad , a high school student , found The Supreme Court and My Hometown program to be both informative and rewarding , as she gained an insider ' s perspective on the court system and learned about the different roles within the judicial branch . If interested , students can apply for the June programs in Chattanooga , Tennessee , and Indianapolis , Indiana , through the Supreme Court Historical Society website . The application deadline is March 1st . For more information about the program , contact Nicole Maffei , the director of civics education for the Supreme Court Historical Society .
