Soldiers from the 1st Squadron , 221st Cavalry teamed up with local law enforcement in downtown Las Vegas , Nevada on December 31 , 2023 . They worked closely with the police to amp up security for the New Year ' s Eve celebrations . The soldiers even took a picture with Brig . Gen . Troy Armstrong and State Command Sgt . Maj . Dennis Basilio , who are bigwigs in the Nevada Army National Guard . On December 30 , 2023 , Gen . Daniel Hokanson , the Chief of the National Guard Bureau , had a chat with the soldiers at the Clark County Armory . He answered their questions about the National Guard . The 92nd Civil Support Team also got a photo op with Gen . Hokanson to discuss their role in the New Year ' s Eve festivities . The Nevada National Guard has been supporting first responders during Las Vegas ' New Year ' s Eve party , "America ' s Party , " for 24 years now . This year , around 200 Guard Soldiers and Airmen were on duty to guarantee everyone ' s safety , help with crowd control , and provide medical assistance . Most of them joined forces with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on the Strip and downtown . Gen . Hokanson also made a stop at the University Medical Center on December 31 , 2023 , to recognize the 152nd Medical Group for their hard work and learn more about their involvement in the New Year ' s Eve celebrations . During his visit to the Clark County Armory on December 30 , 2023 , Gen . Hokanson discussed the current state of the National Guard and what the future holds with the cav soldiers . It all started with their first activation during the Y2K scare in 2000 and has continued even after the events of 9/11 , which just goes to show their unwavering dedication to the annual celebration ' s safety . " The Nevada Army National Guard ' s 1st Squadron , 221st Cavalry , played a crucial role as the main unit in charge of operations and personnel on the Strip on New Year ' s Eve . Additionally , the 92nd Civil Support Team kept an eye on the atmosphere and analyzed any suspicious substances on - site .
