In Wiesbaden , Germany , Al White helps families in tough times as a casualty affairs specialist for Installation Management Command Europe . He believes that death is a natural part of life and every time they assist a family , they are making a difference . White joined the Europe and Africa Casualty Assistance Center in July 2023 after serving in the U . S . Army for 22 years . His family has a long military history , and two of his sons are currently serving . After retiring , he wanted to continue serving and was drawn back to federal service for the benefits . With his experience in the Military Police and as a casualty notification and assistance officer , White found a job that suited his skills in Wiesbaden . He first met his wife during one of his tours in Europe . White believes that serving one ' s country is a duty for American citizens in some way . In his role at the Casualty Assistance Center , he helps the survivors of service members , civilian employees , retirees , and their families who pass away overseas . The team covers a wide area across 86 countries , including parts of Europe , Africa , and Asia . In addition to handling insurance and benefits , they also make travel and funeral arrangements and provide military honors . White finds it rewarding to hear from families about the difference they have made during difficult times . He recently received an email of gratitude from the family of a World War II veteran they had honored at his funeral in England . White always shares these messages with the chain of command to showcase the positive work of the team . Apart from helping families , White has enjoyed being part of the IMCOM - Europe G - 1 team , which he thinks is a great group . "Not just in the casualty section , but in G - 1 in general . The G - 1 family is like a new platoon or company , like back in the military , but we ' re all civilians , " White said . Outside of work , he said he loves being back in Germany , the history , culture and travel opportunities . His favorite pastimes are riding his bike on country roads and visiting castles .
