☷Center reflects on achievements of 2023 while looking ahead

The Precision Strike Missile Increment 1 missile , launched from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System , showed that it could hit its targets during a test flight at White Sands Missile Range on Nov . 13 , 2023 . REDSTONE ARSENAL , Ala . ( Jan . 2 , 2024 ) – The U . S . Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center went through some changes in 2023 . They said goodbye to some leaders and welcomed new ones . Despite these changes , the AvMC workforce proved their dedication to providing top - notch equipment and technology to the military . Dr . James Kirsch , who used to be the director of the Software , Simulation , Systems Engineering and Integration Directorate , became the Center director in 2023 . One of his main goals for 2024 is to build a strong workforce for the future . They made progress on this by partnering with the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering and creating a mentorship program . They also opened their doors to STEM students as part of the Adventures in Engineering initiative . Kirsch also wants to make sure that the current workforce has the tools they need to adapt to the changing landscape . They are providing training and opportunities for their staff to learn about digital engineering , artificial intelligence , and other technologies . In 2023 , Lt . Col . Shannon Thompson joined as the new military deputy . Thompson hopes to strengthen AvMC ' s relationship with the acquisition community . The Precision Strike Missile was a big focus for the Center in 2023 , and they successfully tested the Land - Based Anti - Ship Missile multi - mode seeker technology for integration into PrSM . Kirsch considers the conclusion of the LBASM science and technology program as one of their biggest accomplishments . This technology will be used for PrSM Increment Two . We ' re currently transferring that data to the project office and making arrangements to continue providing the expertise they need . It ' s a great example of how our S&T programs are transitioning successfully to a program of record . The AvMC - managed Army ManTech project also improved manufacturing processes for the LRPF modernization priority , including PrSM and the Army Tactical Missile System programs . This included investment casting processes for missile fins and components , as well as other DoD components . The Software , Simulation , Systems Engineering and Integration Directorate supported the Strategic and Operational Rockets and Missiles Project Office by updating their Multiple Launch Rocket System and High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launchers for the US and international partners . They also upgraded aircraft for other military services and government agencies . The Technology Development Directorate showcased Advanced Teaming and Launched Effects emerging capabilities through participation in the Future Vertical Lift Cross - Functional Team ' s high - visibility EDGE experiment , supporting LE ' s initial fielding for the Army of 2030 and autonomous operations for designing the Army 2040 . The Systems Readiness Directorate developed airworthiness requirements for supervised learning , addressing the rapidly developing AI and machine learning technologies necessary for advanced autonomy in weapon systems . These requirements will be included in the Army ' s Military Airworthiness Certification Criteria and used across the DoD . SRD also released a general airworthiness approval for operating multiple small , unmanned aircraft systems , making it easier for small units to access reconnaissance capabilities without a lengthy process designed for larger systems . Kirsch expressed pride in the dedicated workforce and their mission to provide the best capabilities for Soldiers . Every person here plays a vital role in what we do . The DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center , based in Redstone Arsenal , Alabama , is where the Army focuses on researching and developing advanced technology for aviation and missile systems . It ' s part of the U . S . Army Combat Capabilities Development Command ( DEVCOM ) , which is a big part of the U . S . Army Futures Command . AvMC is in charge of creating cool and creative aviation and missile capabilities for research , development , and engineering solutions that are affordable and meet the Army ' s strategic goals and support its Cross - Functional Teams .
