The City of Durango welcomes as its new Parks and Recreation director Kelly Schmidt , who has a lifelong career in various parks and recreation organizations while focusing on community - input driven decisions .
“I’m excited and honored to accept this appointment , ” Schmidt said at Tuesday’s Council meeting , when her appointment was confirmed .
Schmidt comes to Durango with 25 years of professional experience in the parks and recreation industry , with 11 years of experience in an executive role . Schmidt has earned a Bachelor of Science in natural resources , recreation , and tourism from Colorado State University and a Master of Science in recreation and leisure studies from Texas State University .
“We are very excited to have Kelly come on board , ” said City Manager José Madrigal . “She was the unanimous choice selected out of each of our three interview groups . ”
Schmidt brings tremendous experience to Durango’s Parks and Recreation department . Throughout a lifelong career in parks and recreation , she has worked her way up from entry - level positions such as a lifeguard and camp counselor to leadership executive positions like aquatics director and parks and community services director for various agencies .
She is coming to Durango from Bentonville , Arkansas , where she serves as Community Events Manager for the City of Bentonville .
Highlights of Schmidt’s professional accomplishments with other parks departments include launching several community - driven programs , implementing cost - effective measures to maintain and upgrade park facilities , and creating a safe environment for all park visitors and staff .
“As a leader , I firmly believe in the importance of community engagement and involvement in decision - making processes . My approachable and transparent communication style has allowed me to build strong relationships with stakeholders , community leaders , department team members , and residents , ” Schmidt said . “I am committed to listening to their needs and preferences , incorporating their feedback into planning processes , and continuously striving to meet and exceed the evolving demands of the community , the needs of my team , and the desires of city leadership . ”
