Durango , CO:
The City of Durango Community Development is pleased to partner with Colorado Humanities to present the film
The Five States of Coloradoon January 11 , 2024 at The Powerhouse . Doors open at 5:00 pm . The event is free and open to the public . A debrief Q&A session and facilitated conversation will follow the screening .
In 1989 , Colorado Humanities partnered with filmmaker Jim Havey to create a documentary called The Five States of Colorado . Now , more than 33 years later , the team produced an expanded and updated version to serve as a touchstone for information and perspectives about Colorado and its five major regions: Southern Colorado , Western Colorado , Eastern Plains , Front Range , and Metropolitan Denver .
The film is designed to illustrate the historic development of a population as diverse as the land itself . The Five States of Colorado film will broaden public perspectives on the five diverse regions within the man - made boundaries of Colorado , and illustrate the influence these regions have in shaping the past , present , and future of the state . The film is intended to stimulate thought and conversations on a wide variety of regional topics and issues while commemorating the heritage , culture , and people of Colorado .
The boundaries of Colorado were carved from four different territories by the U . S . Congress in 1861 . These straight lines represent no river , no mountain range , no tribe or language group — yet within the state are many divides , both geographic and human . The “five states” model reveals distinct regions in Colorado , each with its own history , geography , and economy . Each region engenders a certain loyalty from its citizens and has some common ideas about how things should be done .
