Durango Colorado - City announces search for new police chief Brammer to be promoted to assistant city manager 02 January 2024 ( news )

The hunt is on for a new Durango Police chief , as City Manager José Madrigal announced that current Police Chief Bob Brammer will be moving into a new role as the second Assistant City Manager .
“During my tenure in Durango , Bob Brammer has shown exemplary leadership within the Police Department and our Executive Leadership Team . Over the past two months , Bob has expressed an interest in promoting and building upon his executive leadership experience , ” said Madrigal . “As the second Assistant City Manager , he will be a tremendous asset to the City Manager’s Office , the City Council , and the community . ”
The search for a new police chief will begin in mid - January , and Brammer will maintain his role as the chief until a new chief is chosen . Council approval of an appointment for a new chief are expected to take place in Spring of early Summer .
Council held its regularly scheduled 5:30 p . m . meeting at council chambers , 949 East Second Ave .
At the meeting Council:
Received an annual update from Durango Trails on the trail stewardship between the city and the non - profit trail organization . Durango Trails works with the city to build and maintain trails , educate trail users , and create connections among a wide variety of trail users . Each season Durango Trails organizes between 400 and 600 volunteers and has contributed more than 150 , 000 volunteer hours in its 30 - year life span .
Approved a resolution to appoint Kelly Schmidt as the new Parks and Recreation director . Schmidt is currently serving as the Director of Investments of Greenspace and Community Initiatives for Runway Group LLC in Bentonville , Arkansas . She has more than 25 years of professional experience in the parks and recreation industry , with 11 years of experience in an executive role .
Adopted the 2024 - 2026 Durango Public Library Strategic Plan . Goals of the updated plan include extending the library’s reach to underserved users and communities , improving user access to the library’s physical collection , and assess and audit the effectiveness and usage of digital collections .
Reprimanded City Councilor Olivier Bosmans for acting in a manner unbecoming of a councilor and bringing disrepute to the Durango City Council . The resolution calls for a letter of apology from councilors to the city manager and staff following Bosmans’ actions at the
Nov . 7 council meeting .
Chose West 12
thStreet as the name for the new road right of way that’s part of the Downtown Fire Station and Powerhouse Minor Subdivision Preliminary Plan . The subdivision includes dedication of road right of way to the city , which needed to be named . Council chose to move forward with the suggestion made by the city’s Planning Commission with the name West 12
thStreet .
Scheduled a public hearing to discuss proposed updates to the Land Use and Development Code regarding the addition of “detached condominiums” to existing subdivision classifications , and an updated flood insurance study and rate maps .
Received an update on the process for promoting Durango Police Chief Bob Brammer to an Assistant City Manager position .
